Acute services provide medical and surgical treatment mainly within a hospital environment or Minor Injuries Unit. These typically include elective surgery (those procedures planned in advance) and non-elective or urgent intervention. When necessary we buy specialist care as required from other providers.
Acute NHS Trusts provide services such as accident and emergency departments, inpatient and outpatient medicine and surgery and in some cases very specialist medical care. They provide secondary care, ranging from relatively small district hospitals to larger hospitals.
The word acute, in health terms, generally refers to physical illnesses and conditions (usually short-term) which require diagnostic tests, treatment and follow-up care. While longer-term care may be required, most inpatient stays in hospital are only a short length of time.
